Comments :    I have come here to sign the guestbook as I found this lovely organization by doing a new search for Dr. Yasoma Challenor. In the Google search of her name, a link came up for a memory that Dr. Challenor had written for this Chorus. When looking around this website, I found a listing of all who sang in the Chorus. How wonderful to see a picture next to her name, which I recognized immediately. When left behind at birth by my biological parents at White Plains Hospital in 1967, I was moved to Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla, New York where Dr. Challenor was head of Physiatry and Rehab medicine. She would remain my doctor as I entered my 20s.

She had indeed continued to see me as a patient as I aged beyond the usual age of patients at Blythedale. Dr. Challenor would even take or return my calls when a student at Smith College in Massachusetts... that's how dedicated she was to my welfare... that she kept track of me when I was in another state. She was still ordering routine x-rays for me three years after returning home following my graduation in 1989, finding a degenerated disc in my neck. She was adamant that I have surgery in case a fall would have the disc slice through the spinal cord, potentially causing paralysis or death. Within a year or so after this surgery and after she left Blythedale, I lost her contact information.

All these years later, I am writing a book that many have asked me to about my life experiences. Any book would not be complete without mention of Dr. Challenor. She knew me before my true parents did, the parents who saw my picture in a newspaper and decided they wanted to give me a home. I would dearly love to get in touch with her - to see how she is, to ask her questions, but most of all to thank her. I probably would not have reached my 55th birthday last month if not for Dr. Challenor's personal interest, her wonderful care and attention she gave me for the first 25 years of my life.

Should anyone know how to get in touch with her, I would be most appreciative to hear from you. My contact information can be found on my website, www.justcallmegeri.com.

Remembering Dr. Challenor's voice, I can easily imagine that she was a wonderful singer as her voice could be very melodious even when speaking the dry talk of a doctor. I wish I had known of this chorus long ago, so I might have attended a performance to hear what I now read to have been extraordinary music.

Thank you,
Geri

Comments :   Renaissance Chorus Association, Inc Sigmund Rosen just received a call from Larry Lerner, who was a former Music and Art student of Harold Brown and founding singer of RCNY, describing the actual recording session at the Cathedral of St John Divine in the late '50s of our Baroque 9002: Josquin Una Musque de Buscaya (note the various spellings). He has the LP still. I hope we can get together eventually. A reunion would be great! Perhaps we should start planning for the 70th Chorus anniversary!

Comments :   We are sorry to report the passing, on Monday May 12, of our singing friend William Salchow. We met at the Friday group conducted by Ray and later Boyd. Bill as he was known to all was a supporter of our Harold Brown recording project, and as a chamber player had Harolds Quintet score. His late wife was Mannes professor, violist Rosemary Glyde. I last spoke with him 4/6 and he seemed somewhat upbeat about future sings, and moving back to Manhattan. Fate took him, however, and his son Steve indicates a memorial will be planned for the fall. He was an officer of the Viola Society, a cellist and renowned world-wide as a foremost bow maker. Steve and the family continue the business, and we know their works will endure for centuries.

Comments :   Theodore George Grudzinski: February 22, 1934–July 13, 2013

Charlottesville, VA

Ted died this morning in Virginia. I was able to cradle him in my arms, as he had asked. His family was with him.

here is an eecummings poem that he once sent to me.

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it
(anywhere i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet)
i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

Comments :   Ted Grudzinski was hospitalized on July 4th at Augusta Medical Center here in Staunton Virginia. His children and some of his grandchildren have now come down from New York to be here with him. His local friends have visited him.

Tomorrow he will be moved to hospice care at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation in Fishersville, VA.

I have been playing baroque music on Pandora for him in his hospital room—while he sleeps. When I told him we were listening to Boccherini he opened his eyes, gave me a disdainful look and said—"I know that." I have downloaded the Queens College 50th anniversary performance of his Requiescat setting and have played that for him. He gives a half smile as he listens.

Several, after our successful record launch (Albany TROY 1352) asked for this. Most pressing could be the complete 1930 Quartet, and parts to 1932++, and viola parts to 1935 Quintet. Parts to 1931 W/W trio.

Comments :   Ted [Grudzinski] has made a remarkable recovery from a cascade of unfortunate medical issues and complications. He signed himself out of the rehab hospital this weekend—and went back to his home in Churchville. His family has been with him for Easter and they spent a glorious day in Staunton yesterday.

He still has a long way to go—but is strong-willed and determined. You can contact him now at home: tedgrudz@netzero.net or 540-885-1848.

I am now back on the west coast in San Diego and San Francisco—catching up with my work and my family—all of whom will be in the Bay Area this week for various personal and professional reasons. Happy Spring.

Comments :   Happy Passover—Ted update

Sunday evening
Augusta Medical Center
Fishersville, VA

There is a light snow falling today in Staunton. A late snow... March 24. Ted has been in the hospital since last Saturday. His eldest daughter Lisa came for the weekend—and picked some heather & daffodils from his garden. Just before the snows came. They are on his bed tray now.

He has had a rocky course this week. Cardiac issues, renal issues, sepsis.

Now they are trying to stabilize him in order to do a liver biopsy tomorrow...to see what else is going on. This weekend he has had a fair amount of pain, some delerium, somnolence and confusion.

The care here is excellent. He has a hospitalist, urologist, cardiologist (who looks just like Yo-Yo Ma...and went to Columbia...but claims not to be musical), nephrologist and oncologist.

We have been listening to Chopin, Bach and early music—and Jane Monheit (a new favorite)—on Pandora. Tonite he is too restless and uncomfortable for music.

I have brought into the hospital copies of his new, revised edition of A Musical Thesaurus & his Winequest: A Wine Dictionary. And pictures of him from back in the 50's—when we first met. To remind the staff, and me, and him—of the person he really is.

Thank you all for your calls and wishes.
Chag sameach.

Comments :   The Brown family archives yielded fascinating letters from HB's lessons with Mme. Boulanger 1930-1. Cleared up some Bearns Prize and NBC Sym.-Divertimento chronology. Also letters of recommendation – and reproach – from Istomin, Bernstein, Copland, Greenberg, Hanson, Barzun, et al. All the more imperative to produce new parts/scores. We shared the Tessera CD with several noted colleagues. Expect more on the comments file.

In lieu of membership dues, I am considering a proposal to support publishing projects as previously we supported the CD- by Kickstarter. The ALBANY TROY 1352 CD had generated interest in updated, re-edited parts & scores. Comments?

Comments :   I sang with Harold Brown and the R C of NY when at M&A. The date of the Carnegie Hall/Schneider/Chrismas Concert was 1955, not 54. Harold was not fired from his job at M&A as a result of the 55 xmas concert, as he was there when I graduated in June 1957. After the Carnegie concert the group ceased to be a school club, and went independent. We rehearsed Sat mornings at the old pink catholic chapel at NYU (on Wash Sq N). Harold had such a devoted following from his former students that Charlie Van Tassel and (I think) Dave Weisbrod came down from Hew Haven on Sat mornings.

Comments :   In my joy at finding this tribute to Harold Brown and the Renaissance chorus I left out my name in the entry I made yesterday. In 1965, when I sang with the Chorus, I was a young mother with 3 small children at home. I had been a student in the Humanities at the University of Chicago. A pianist, I returned to New York, married, and studied chamber music at the New School taught by members of the Budapest String Quartet. I believe that's where I met Harold Brown who asked me to audition for the Chorus. I was a good sight reader and I was so happy that Harold gave me the opportunity to sing with the group. He was an inspiring musician and a fine human being.

Comments :   Congrats on the Centennial. I wish that I could have been there and seen old friends. So glad that it went well and that there might be another event someday. I'll sure try to come! It would have been much more meaningful to me than the 40th high school reunion that I attended in 2008: during my teens, my friends were in the Renaissance Chorus, not in my high school.
Thanks for keeping me on the mailing list and sending out postings. I really appreciate all the efforts you folks have made, in keeping Renaissance music and Harold Brown's memory alive. Both the music and the friendships formed around the singing have made a difference in so many people's lives.

Comments :   Dear John Hetland: I thought you would be interested to know that I as well recorded most of the singing. I do not plan to go into competition with you if for no other reason than I am sure it will take me a very long time to do the necessary transfers. I used what is called a digital voice recorder, (which I have a had a while, but have not used much in this way), about half the size of an ipod, though twice as thick. I listened to it with ear phones on the way home and was quite surprised with the quality of the recording, given the little device it was recorded on.
It was a great weekend! Best wishes, Klaus

Louis can be heard intoning the incipit in Harold's 1975 Fayrfax Missa tecum principium. Louis, a strikingly tall man and true bass, was devoted to the choral traditions of his ancestral Northern Italian forbearers and graced several fine choirs, including Cerddorian and that of Notre Dame [shrine].

Comments :   Hi Ruth,
I remember well the 1961 concert in which I participated- have the flyer in my scrap book. I appreciated the Renaissance chorus and H. B. and was grateful to him for the trust that he had in my playing capacities (I was a mere 20 at the time). Regretfully I will not be able to be at your celebrations as I live in Geneva, Switzerland (since 1973). Keep me informed nevertheless, and should you be in my corner of the world it would be a pleasure to meet you.
Best wishes for a successful celebration.

Comments :   I am coming to the reunion!! at last, finally I have time to focus on this event. I still sing and play (the recorder), practice every week, and definitely would like to participate wherever possible. I sight read and sing music very well, AND still have my copies of the music we sang!! DesPres, Ockeghem, Hassler, Brown etc. I left the chorus around 1968-9 to have my daughter Sonia - whose infant self I brought to a rehearsal at Columbia. Anyone remember that?

surrounded by her family. Many friends have been coming and going, including me, but at this time they are not particularly encouraging visitors. Her three boys make music constantly, and she lies there, eyes closed, happily conducting. I know how muc
She can't really talk on the phone, but you never know. At any rate, she probably would be happy to hear you called. So, if you feel moved to: 773-764-2692.

Moore, the principal of Mercury Music Corp. with the price for borrowing...that Mr & Mrs Frank Moore are allowed to hear said concert [he continued](This wasn't thought of until I glanced again at the first few measures!)- Would that current publishers be so interested. This may indicate the thirst for this music that HB found.

Will love to hear from old friends and recall those exciting endogamic avant garde musical times. In case you don't remember me I am that shy but red-diaper spaniard WSC student who walked into RC by the hand of Lorry, Peter Kurz, Peter Heim, Joel Meltz, and Ray Rosenstock. Comment :   Judy and I habitually listened to Joel Meltz' radio program. One evening he announced that he would be leading a singing session at a coffeehouse in the East Village. We and 2-3 others did that, with weekly continuation. Then, Joel invited us to join the R C. Someone there told us that once Harold got so carried away by the music that he forgot to keep a grip on his baton and it went sailing out an open window. If someone who actually witnessed that event in person could describe it instead of our second-hand description, it would be appreciated.
